Blood

Park Ji-Sang (Ahn Jae-Hyun) is a vampire surgeon who’s spent his life running from his parents’ murderers. When he ends up at Taemin hospital in Seoul, he meets surgeon Yoo Ri-Ta (Ku Hye-Sun) as well as mysterious Lee Jae-Wook (Ji Jin-Hee), who might well be more than he seems. As his past resurfaces and a growing thirst for blood keeps him from saving lives, Ji-Sang must learn to find the limits between human… and monster.

I wasn’t expecting much, but a comment on AsianWiki that claimed Blood was better than Healer and that you just had to get through the first two episodes to get to the good stuff encouraged me to give it a chance. It’s the second time I go against my instincts, and the second time I’m proven horribly wrong to do so.

In a word: the people who think this is better than Healer have serious judgement issues, no offense intended. Actors, plot, music and directing, nothing here manages to even be one tenth as good as Ji Chang-Wook’s latest.

I’ll make this quick.

It’s Bad

It’s really, really bad.

For several reasons.

The plot is abysmal. Really. It’s basically made of clichés and more clichés, and the whole thing is so dreadfully linear the entire show banks on a single villain and a protagonist who keeps letting people lead him around like an extremely dumb pet. Let’s not forget the Grey’s Anatomy remake side of the show, which bored me to tears, and the disastrous special effects the likes of which can be found in Twilight. In fact, I didn’t think you could do worse than Twilight, but Blood is almost there. The make-up isn’t too bad, but that’s pretty much all the positive I could find in the show’s supernatural. Let’s, however, give a tentative round of applause for the effort at making something—somewhat—original of vampirism, which has become a virus.

Huh?

What to say of the two main characters’ relationship? They can’t stand each other until Ji-Sang realizes she’s the girl he saved when he was 15—and whom he still somehow remembers 20 years later, go figure—and poof! he falls in love right this instant, irritation and dislike suddenly gone, kiss-kiss fall in love! You’ll also forgive me if I’m not convinced by the childhood crush become true love for the one and only girl the dude has met in his entire life…

On to the bad guy. Why is he bad again? Oh, right. He’s a doctor, and since he couldn’t stand to lose his patients—maybe it’s time to consider a career change, mate—he decided to save the world with the virus. 75% of the hospital work for him, as well as, probably, the entire world, who wear black hooded sweatshirts for some unfathomable reason given that you can see their face anyway.

The leads aren’t too bad, but this is only Ahn Jae-Hyun’s (You From Another Star) third time as a male lead so he’s far from dazzling, and there’s absolutely no chemistry between him and his partner Ku Hye-Sun (Boys Before FlowersAngel Eyes). On screen, that is.

As for the soundtrack, while the instrumentals weren’t bad, none were unforgettable either, and the songs were bland and boring, which I never thought I’d say one day, given that I usually find at least one track to like better than the others.

All in All…

I only liked three things: the surgery scenes—gone after 4 episodes in favor of bad drama, the pervert robot and Ji-Sang’s sidekick, Hyun-Woo.

I therefore regret to inform you that I dropped this drama after 8 episodes of suffering even before it finished airing.

RIP.
